This General Building Inspectorate's Approval includes seven pages and six annexes.

*) This general building inspectorate's approval replaces the Certificate of Approval No. Z-19.14-527 of 22 March 1991.The object of approval was first approved under the general building inspectorate/building law requirements on 22 March 1991.

I. GENERAL PROVISIONS
1. This general building inspectorate's approval is deemed to be the proof of usability of the object of approval as required in the Land Building Regulations.
2. The general building inspectorate's approval does not substitute the permits, approvals and certificates legally required for building projects.
3.The general building inspectorate's approval is granted irrespective of the rights of third parties, particularly private property rights.
4.The manufacturer and distributor shall, irrespective of further regulations in the "Special Provisions", provide the user of the object of approval with copies of the general building inspectorate's approval and shall inform the user that the general building inspectorate's approval must be available at the building site where the object of approval is being used. Copies of the general building inspectorate's approval shall be presented to the authorities involved upon request.
5.Only the complete general building inspectorate's approval may be reproduced/copied. Publication of excerpts shall be subject to the approval of the Building Engineering Institute. The text and drawings of promotional literature must not be contradictory to the general building inspectorate's approval. Translations of the Approval Certificate shall include the information "Translation of the German original version, which is not authorized by the Building Engineering Institute".
6.The German Building Engineering Institute reserves the right to check that the provisions of this general building inspectorate's approval have been observed, either in the manufacturing plant or at the building site.
7.The general building inspectorate's approval may be withdrawn. The Provisions of the general building inspectorate's approval may be supplemented and modified at a later date, particularly if this is based on new engineering findings.
8.The building products listed in the general building inspectorate's approval require proof of conformity and must be marked with the conformity marks (C-marks) according to the conformity symbol regulations of the Federal States.

II. SPECIAL PROVISIONS

1 Object of approval and application
1.1 Object of approval
1.1.1 The general building inspectorate's approval is applicable to the fabrication of the double-layer fireproof glazing of glass blocks according to DIN 18 1751) and its use as a component of fire resistance class G 120 according to DIN 4102 132).
1.1.2 The double-layer fireproof glazing shall be made of glass blocks according to DIN 18 1751), type "SOLARIS glass block 198 BSH 20", the reinforcement, the fixing means, and, optionally, a steel frame according to section 2.
1.2 Application
1.2.1 Based on the standard fire regulations according to DIN 4102-23) , fireproof glazings which have obtained the building inspectorateís approval prevent the penetration of flames and incendiary gas for at least 120 minutes. However, they do not prevent the penetration of radiant heat. For this reason, they can only be installed where the building inspectorateís regulations are not opposed to the installation for reasons of fire protection (e.g. glass blocks as transluscent gaps in floor walls. Take care that the lower edge of the glazing is laid at least 1.8 m above the floor level).
The local building inspectorate will decide on its approval in each individual case.
1.2.2 The conditions for vertically arranged (position > 80 ° to 90 ° ) fire proof glazings are
- walls of at least 24 cm thickness. Alternatively, the glazings can be placed between pillars of brick-work according to DIN 1053-14) consisting of bricks of the resistance class 12 and mortar of at least the mortar group II or
- at least 24 cm thick walls or between components made of concrete or reinforced concrete according to DIN 10455) with a minimum strength classification of B10 or B15.
The components positioned all around the fireproof glazing must meet at least fire protection classification F120 according to DIN 4102-23).
1.2.3 The maximum admissible size of the fireproof glazing is 4.4 m2. If the glass blocks are arranged vertically, the maximum admissible height is 350 cm; if they are arranged horizontally, the maximum admissible width is 600 cm.
1.2.4 Several fireproof glazings may be arranged together to build a window.
2. Provisions for the building products
2.1 Properties and composition 2.1.1 Glass blocks
Glass blocks according to DIN 18 1751), type "SOLARIS glass block 198 BSH 20", dimensions 190 mm x 190 mm x 80 mm shall be used for fireproof glazings in accordance with this general building inspectorate's approval (refer to annex 4). They must be undamaged.
2.1.2 Reinforcement Reinforcement bars dia. 6 mm or 8 mm of BSt 420/500 RU shall be used in the horizontal and vertical joints.
2.1.3 Fixing means
Dowels with steel bolts M 10 which are generally admitted by the building inspectorate shall be used to fix the fireproof glazings at the reveals of solid components.
2.1.4 The glass block fields may be optionally enclosed with a frame of U steel sections, dimensions 120 mm x 55 mm x 7 mm.
2.2 Manufacturing and identification of building products
2.2.1 Manufacturing The appropriate provision of the sections 2.1.1 to 2.1.4 shall be observed when manufacturing the building products.
2.2.2 Identificatio 2.2.2.1 Identification of the building products
The building products and the packaging of the products or the delivery notes shall be identified by the manufacturer with the compliance marks (C- marks) in accordance with the compliance mark regulations of the Federal States. Identification shall not be done unless the conditions of section 2.3 concerning the compliance verification are met. 2.2.2.2 Identification of the fireproof glazing Each fireproof glazing according to this general building inspectorate's approval shall be identified by the completing or installing manufacturer with a steel sheet plate showing the following embossed data:
"Fireproof glazing of fire resistance class G 120 of glass blocks according to DIN 18 175". Name (and ident. No., if any) of the manufacturer having completed/installed the fireproof glazing (refer to section 4.4).
-Name of the applicant (if any), if other than manufacturer.

-Year of manufacture ...
The plate shall be screwed to the rim or frame of the fireproof glazing (position see annex 1).
2.3 Compliance verification 2.3.1 General
The building products required by the provisions of this general building inspectorate's approval as glass block, frame sections, reinforcement and fixing means shall not be used for the manufacturing of the fireproof glazing unless the compliance verification required in the appropriate verification of application is provided. 2.3.2 In-plant production control
An in-plant production control shall be established and implemented with each manufacturer of the building products. The provisions of the German Building Engineering Institute for the in plant production control for building products6) shall be observed. The results of the in plant production control shall be recorded, evaluated and kept for at least five years. They shall be produced on request by the German Building Engineering Institute and the relevant superior building inspectorate.

3. Dimensioning provisions
As far as statics and fire prevention issues are concerned, the lintel on top of the fireproof glazing shall be dimensioned so that the fireproof glazing (except its dead weight) is not exposed to additional vertical stress.

4 Execution provisions
4.1 General
The fireproof glazing must be assembled from the building products according to section 2 at the place of installation.
Fireproof glazings according to this general building inspectorate's approval shall be executed only by companies with sufficient experience in this field and who employ suitably trained personnel.
4.2 Assembly provisions
4.2.1 Provisions for assembling glass blocks
The double layer fireproof glazing shall be bricked up with glass blocks according to section 2. There must be a clear distance of at least 40mm between the two layers. Cement mortar of group III according to DIN 105314) shall be used. A dia. 6 mm reinforcement bar according to section 2 shall be inserted into every second joint. For glass block fields up to a height of 180 cm, a dia. 6 mm reinforcement bar according to section 2 shall be inserted into all horizontal joints. From a height of 180 cm, a second dia. 6 mm reinforcement bar according to section 2 shall be inserted in addition into the four lower horizontal joints. The vertical reinforcement bars must lie inside and shall not be fixed to the horizontal reinforcement bars. Two dia. 8 mm reinforcement bars each according to section 2 shall be arranged in the circumferential outer rim strip of cement mortar, the width of which shall be 50 to 100 mm (refer to annexes 3 and 4).
Furthermore, the provisions of DIN norm 42427) shall be observed for the execution and dimensioning of glass block fields.
4.2.2 Provisions for assembling the frame If the glass block fields are enclosed with a frame according to section 2, the corners of the frame shall be miter cut and welded to each other. Steel parts of the frame which are not accessible after assembly shall be provided with durable corrosion protection, steel parts which are accessible after assembly shall be provided with priming coat which remains effective at least for three months after the term of delivery. 4.2.3 In case of glass block fields with steel frame (see annex 3) enclosures which are arranged one beside the other the vertical joints shall be welded to each other. Strips of approximately 10 mm thickness made of non-flammable mineral fiber boards (building material class DIN 4102-A)8) shall be provided between the individual joints.
4.2.4 Joints (15 mm wide) between the glass block fields shall be provided for glass block fields without steel frame enclosure which are arranged one beside the other, which shall be completely filled by approx. 20 mm thick strips of non flammable mineral fiber board (building material class DIN 4102 A)8), melting point above 1000 ° C and bulk density at least 30 kg/m3). 4.3 Provision for the installation of the fireproof glazing 4.3.1 The rim of the fireproof glazing must be covered completely by the adjacent components. At their upper edge the glass block fields shall be fixed at a spacing of 150 cm - twice at least - by means of dowels with steel bolts M 10 which are generally admitted by the building inspectorate. The required minimum spacings of the dowels shall be observed. The glass block fields shall be secured at their upper edge with at least 120 mm long angle steel sections , which are to be screwed to the two rims via threaded rods(see annex 3, detail B). The angle-steel sections must be fixed with steel screws M10 which carry the general building inspectorate's approval. The required minimum rim distance of the dowels must be observed. Approx. 15 mm thick strips of non-flammable mineral fiber board (building material class DIN 4102-A)8) shall be inserted into all joints between the glass block fields and the reveals of the adjacent solid components or the circumferential steel frame to form expansion joints. The same shall be applicable to the formation of corners with the glass block fields (see annex 4). 4.3.2 If the glass block fields are designed with a circumferential steel frame, the upper steel frame section may be optionally welded to flat steel or angle steel sections which shall be fixed to the reveals (see annex 3, detail A). The joints between the reveals of the adjacent solid components and the steel frame of the fireproof glazing shall be closed by means of non-flammable building materials, e.g. mortar of mineral building materials or non-flammable mineral wool (building material class DIN4102-A)8), the melting point of which shall be above 1000 ° C. 4.4 Compliance certificate
The contractor completing the fireproof glazing (object of approval) shall issue a compliance certificate for each project certifying that the fireproof glazing and the building products (e.g. frame sections, panes) used for the fireproof glazing meet the provisions of this general building inspectorate's approval (for a sample of this compliance certificate refer to annex 6). This certificate shall be submitted to the principal for handing over to the relevant building inspectorate, if necessary.

5 Provisions for application, maintenance and servicing
5.1 Replacement of glass blocks
If damaged or broken glass block must be replaced care should be taken to use glass blocks which meet this general building inspectorate's approval. They shall be installed according to the provisions. 5.2 Safety of use
Relevant verification documents shall be prepared if requirements are made to the fireproof glazing due to relevant safety regulations (e.g. shatterproof design, protection from falling down).
